Course Description

This course is designed to equip foot care practitioners with the essential knowledge and practical skills to prevent and control infection in clinical and domiciliary settings. Learners will explore how foot infections are caused, understand the types and behaviours of microorganisms, and examine how infection can spread in a foot health environment. Also, it covers important terminology such as pathogenic and non-pathogenic organisms, commensals, saprophytes, and parasites. It also identifies foot conditions linked to bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.

Participants will learn how to break the chain of infection through proper hygiene practices, effective sterilisation and disinfection of instruments, and safe waste disposal methods specific to foot health care.

The course has the following chapters:

Chapter 1: Understanding How Foot Infections Are Caused
In this chapter we will explore how foot infections develop, distinguishing between pathogenic and non-pathogenic organisms. The chapter introduces the characteristics of commensals, saprophytes, and parasites, as well as the roles of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites in causing specific foot-related conditions.

Chapter 2: How Infection Spreads
This chapter explains the conditions microorganisms need to grow, how they enter the body, and the concept of cross-contamination. It also introduces the chain of infection, helping practitioners understand how infections are transmitted and how to interrupt that process.

Chapter 3: Sterilisation and Disinfection in Foot Health Care
Here, learners will study the processes and agents used for effective sterilisation and disinfection. The focus will be on industry-standard practices for cleaning and preparing foot care instruments safely to prevent microbial transmission.
